They started to walk back to the others, holding hands, not talking.

But Jerry suddenly uttered a low cry and dropped her hand as if it were a bomb.

She saw immediately what had alarmed him.

That figure standing in the shadows of the house.

It was Renee.

She must have seen everything.

Chapter 12

"Hi! Renee!" Jerry tried to be cool, to act as if he were glad to see her there, but his voice was shaky, and he sounded a bit too glad.

"Hi, Jerry." She stepped out of the shadows and walked up to them, her hands in the pockets of the cotton windbreaker she was wearing over jeans.

**We were looking for firewood," Karen said. Pretty lame, but at least it was an attempt.

Renee didn't look at Karen, didn't acknowledge her presence in any way. "Nice night," she said, without enthusiasm, and wrapped her arm around Jerry's.

"Yeah. It's great," Jerry said uneasily.

Karen let Jerry and Renee get a little ahead of her. Maybe she didn't see us kissing, she thought. It was very dark, after all.

Renee held tightly onto Jerry's arm, leaning against him as they walked over the cold sand to the camp fire. Karen, a few yards behind, couldn't hear what they were saying. But they both seemed to be acting as if nothing had happened, as if Renee
